COVID 19 - Government Support

​Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB)

The CERB gives financial support to employed and self-employed Canadians who are directly affected by COVID-19. If you are eligible, you can receive $2,000 for a 4-week period. If your situation continues past 4 weeks, you will need to apply for the CERB again. You may re-apply for up to a total of 16 weeks.

​Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB)

The government is proposing the Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB) that would provide support to students and new graduates who are not eligible for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit or Employment Insurance or unable to work due to COVID-19. This benefit would provide $1,250 per month for eligible students or $2,000 per month for eligible students with dependents or disabilities.  This benefit would be available from May to August 2020. More details will be made available soon.

RRIF Relief for Seniors

The Government of Canada announced some new measures to help support Canadians impacted by Covid-19.

If you are a senior and hold a RRIF, you may want to utilize the RRIF relief option. 

The government is offering a flexible 25% reduction of the required 2020 RRIF minimum payment to help seniors who are redeeming assets during this challening market. This measure gives flexibility to anyone concerned they may have to liquidate their RRIF assets to meet minimum withdrawal requirements. 

Similar rules apply to anyone receiving variable benefit payments under a defined contribution Registered Pension Plan.

​BC Emergency Benefit

The BC Emergency Benefit for Workers, a tax-free, one time $1,000 payment for BC residents whose ability to work has been affected due to COVID-19.

Be sure to apply as soon as possible after you stop working. If you wait more than 4 weeks after your last day of work to apply, you may lose benefits.
